About Possum Merino

Possum Merino is a unique New Zealand yarn made from blending natures finest, Possum fur and Merino lamb’s wool.

Possum fibre has a hollow core that traps air and thus gives excellent insulation with an extremely high warmth to weight ratio. When blended with fine Merino, it creates a luxuriously soft, lightweight garment with low pilling properties and superior fibre strength. Research has shown it to be 55% warmer than Merino alone and 35% warmer than cashmere.

Ecowool Care about the Environment

The use of Possum fibre in New Zealand benefits our environment by contributing to the effort to protect our native forest and birds.

The brushtail Possum was introduced to New Zealand in 1837, it is a natural predator and an ecological threat. Each night possums eat over 21,000 tons of native vegetation. In addition to this they compete for food with native birds, also eating the birds eggs, chicks and insects. The commercial use of possum fur fibre is encouraged by conservation groups and plays an important role in the protection of New Zealand’s native fuana, flora and wildlife.

Your purchase not only means that you have acquired a unique garment that will give you years of pleasure, but also that you have contributed to the preservation of New Zealand’s natural habitats, an environmentally sound choice.

Caring for your Knitwear

Possum Merino knitwear is very easy care. It is naturally odour resistant so requires less washing, which is kinder on you, and the environment.

When washing is required, please refer to your garment care label for specific washing instructions.

Gentle hand wash in cool water using a small amount of mild wool detergent.

  • Do not use bleach or spot cleaning products
  • Rinse well in cool water – hot water will cause shrinkage
  • We recommend using the same water temperature for both washing and rinsing your garment
  • Gently squeeze and/or roll garment in a towel to absorb excess water
  • Dry flat in shade
  • Do not tumble dry
  • Iron on wool setting
  • Drycleanable

Good Quality Gloves / Soft Knit

    Laura

Soft, warm, quality gloves, fine knit. For reference, I have slim fingers/hands, my measurements with splayed fingers are 8cm (palm), 18cm (top of finger to wrist). Ecowool suggested I choose a M, which is perfect for length, but fits rather roomy in the palm section/top of glove.. If I buy another colour I will size down so there isn’t so much slack around the hands, or perhaps wash in warm water to shrink them a little bit as I do prefer a former fit like on the model photos.

I had bought a pair of these while visiting NZ, and absolutely loved them. I unfortunately lost them a couple of months ago, and I’m so happy with my new pair. They’re just perfect. Thanks for shipping internationally (I live in France). I will definitely buy more of your products in the future.

    Accurate fit, fine knit.

Medium are good fit for my average-sized, retirement-age, female hands. My hand width 8.6cm with fingers splayed out. I take a Medium in a leather gloves so thought safe to choose Medium. The model in photo has slimmer fingers & a tighter looking fit so wonder if she’s wearing a Small? Not sloppy around fingers but secure, comfy fit. Good wrist coverage. Fine wool so not overly chunky. Immediately toasty. Shame about the possums (I feed mine in suburban Brisbane) but I get it. Now tempted to buy more products. Delivery time NZ To Brisbane was reasonable.

Perfect for those chilly working from home hands

    Rob

Just received my gloves in the post in AU a few days after ordering. The main thing I was worried about is size but the size guide is accurate and perfect, I measured mine to be just smaller than Medium dimensions and gloves fit perfectly if not with a little room (as I would expect given my hands were slightly smaller). So, my advice is measure and you won’t be dissapointed! Warmth wise, these are exactly what I needed to keep my hands warm but still be able to type! 5 stars!

I discovered beautiful possum/merino knitwear whilst visiting New Zealand some years ago.
The jumpers are so lightweight but so warm. I have many colours in my wardrobe and I receive comments on their quality every time I wear them.
I also have the possum fingerless gloves and can wear these with ease if playing the keyboard or using the computer.

I get really cold hands and needed something to wear all day and still be able to do everything – indoors and out. These are perfect and such a nice fit. They’re really warm and I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another pair in a different colour! So worth it.

I just received my gloves, I bought a Medium. Often I have previously found wool to be a bit itchy but with these I have not found this to be the case so far. They look and feel like high quality gloves, they have thick form fitting cuffs and around my fingers that will stop any cold air or wind getting in. A note on the sizing, I have medium to large hands but very fine/skinny with skinny wrists and these gloves are very form hugging. I would suggest if you have similar or larger hands than me in length and thickness of fingers, hands and wrists then pick the large size. If I was to buy another pair I would buy a large.
Either way, I highly recommend these gloves to people 🙂

The softness and luxurious feeling of natural possum fiber makes me very cozy and comfortable.
I wear them for the entire winter, working on my computer in my study, as I like to keep the window open.
